I figured I need to say hello. I'm hoping to race the GP79 at Zolder this weekend. I'm an experienced sim racer who is just getting back into the game after discovering rFactor.

I was racing some on the PS3 with F1 2010-12, etc. But luckily the Thrustmaster wheel I bought works with my PC as well. So after checking out rFactor, and then discovering the GP79 mod, I'm hooked. Some stuff about me:

I've been into sim racing since GP2 on the PC. I cut my teeth on Papyrus' Nascar Racing. Anyone know what Hawaii (in relation to sim racing) was? I rang up $200/mo phone bills racing on that. I also was lucky enough to race against NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Jr on multiple occasions there. (He was pretty decent).

But my favorite all time sim was Grand Prix Legends. Until I recently found rFactor (yeah, I've been out of the loop) it was/is the king of racing simulation. I was lucky enough to race regularly with some of the developers of the game, as well as creator Dave Kaemmer. That sim really taught me a lot about racing and until I tried this GP79 mod, I haven't felt a challenge anywhere near what GPL provided.

Enough dropping names and trying to prove that I'm not a newbie. I've been practicing all week and hope to see everyone on the track for a safe race. I have some doubts about Race2Play and other stuff, but I'll run some races and see how things go and work from there.

BTW - if my bad manners, lack of etiquette and worldliness haven't tagged me already...I'm an American. So Any other USA F1 fans are more than welcome in my small circle.

After reading this I think you are the man we need. :)

GP2, GPL and NASCAR are the best recomendations. I personally started from Microprose GP2 in 1996 and I was hooked too. Until I discovered GP1979 the better F1 game didn't existed for me.

About R2P... You can read our history why we are there. Sometimes some newbies come and try to "cross our racelines" but we are rather the community of clean, mature and gentle drivers. I don't remember my last accident in GP1979.

If I would give you some tips before the first race: let the brakes and tires warm, they need 2-3 laps to work properly. Especially first lap is always critical. Late braking at the end od the longest straight just before the slow chicane at Lap 1 can be deadly.

What else? Just welcome and good luck!

P.S.: I have made some setups. Check out Zolder pre-race posts.

My concerns about R2P are simply that anyone can join and race. I ran my first race last night with a simple Skoda race, and my initial impressions were that many people cheated where possible and had no concern for their fellow racers. I've raced enough to know how shitty it is to be punted by someone who can't be bothered to learn a track/car. But the fact that anyone who has signed up can start the race without any other test bothers me.

And with the GP79 mod, you really have to know your car to race it. So it really worries me that people who haven't bothered to learn are going to show up and cause issues. I guess we'll see and go from there. (And I'm so hoping that I'm not that guy who causes a problem).

And you are right! More than most mods/sims, you really have to let these cars get their tires warm before settling in. I joined the server tonight just to make sure I could w/o problems and got to run a race start. Are we doing a warmup lap before the standing start (the server was set to this)? If so, this should help a little with cold tires. You can run a full warmup lap and it significantly helps your tire temps.

I gave your W07 setup a go, and gleaned some stuff from it. I've learned a lot over the years about how to setup a race car to my driving style, and I really thank you for helping me with the setup. I'm running 1:23's in race trim right out a of the gate, so I hope that'll keep me outta last place come race day.
